New CheapOair.ca survey finds that a majority of Canadians are not aware of the Ontario ‘Staycation’ Tax Credit, with over 55 per cent of respondents reporting that they are likely to travel within Ontario

TORONTO, ONTARIO, February 2, 2022

Leading online travel agency CheapOair.ca today released the results of a new survey geared at Ontario travellers in an effort to better understand the perception towards the recently unveiled Ontario ‘Staycation’ Tax Credit, while also gauging 2022 travel perception and concerns as restrictions are slowly lifted.

The CheapOair.ca Travel Perceptions study found that over 66 per cent of respondents were not aware of the Ontario Staycation tax credit. Unsurprisingly, interest in travelling is increasing, and more than 55 per cent of respondents stated they were highly likely (30.4 per cent) and likely (25 per cent) to travel to claim the tax credit.

The Ontario Government recently unveiled the Ontario ‘Staycation’ Tax Credit, which allows Ontario residents to claim up to 20 per cent of eligible leisure accommodation expenses for stays that occur between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022, when filing their personal 2022 Income Tax. Individuals can claim up to $1,000 and families can claim up to $2,000 of eligible expenses to get back returns of up to $200 and $400 respectively.

The survey also revealed that the biggest concerns related to travel for Ontarians continue to be ‘exposure to COVID-19’ and the variants (34.8 per cent) followed by ‘flights being cancelled’ and ‘being unable to return from the destination’ (tied at 17.3 per cent) as the next concerns. Additional results worth noting:

  • Adventure Above All Else: As it relates to type of travel, half of all Ontario respondents (50 per cent) expressed interest in going on an outdoor/adventure trip while over a third (34 per cent) are interested in exploring Family Theme Parks, indicating that Ontarians are looking to get out and explore the great outdoors more as opposed to staying home and not travelling.
  • Canadians Are Road Warriors: A majority of Ontario respondents (61 per cent) prioritize travel via personal/owned vehicles ahead of air (35 per cent), rental vehicles (12 per cent), or rail (8 per cent).
  • Consumer Confidence: Roughly one-quarter of consumers (24.2 per cent) say their travel confidence has been unchanged over the past three months, with 22 per cent of respondents claiming that their confidence in travelling has decreased and 20 per cent saying their confidence has increased.

“What this survey showed us was that Ontarians were not aware of the available travel savings, in light of the fact that they are eager to plan travel. With the rising cost of living and services, our goal is to help Canadians save as much as they can on travel,” said Daniel Hayter, Senior Product Manager for CheapOair.ca. “As a leading online travel agency and resource, we will continue to help share ways for Canadians to save on their future travel, accommodation and transportation bookings.”

For the survey methodology, CheapOair.ca conducted this study for a 12-day period from January 15 to January 26, 2022, with results determined automatically through a third-party tracking system. The survey was representative of Ontario consumers that visited the CheapOair.ca website, regardless of whether a booking was made or not.

With unique travel trend insights gleaned from CheapOair.ca’s dedicated travel consumer base, their mission is to educate and aid consumers and travel professionals in both planning their travel accommodations and staying current on the most popular destinations.

Note to media: Additional survey results and interviews can be arranged upon request.

Fareportal and Air Carrier aha! Join Forces to Serve US Regional Air Travelers

Fareportal, the travel technology company behind leading online travel agencies CheapOair and OneTravel, has announced the addition of aha! to the over 600 air carriers already available via the company’s online websites. The brands were the first of the major OTAs to be selected as a preferred partner and reach an agreement with the new airline. aha! went live on CheapOair and OneTravel in late November of this year.

aha! is a leisure airline brand of ExpressJet Airlines, and provides service to smaller communities with convenient, short, nonstop flights to in-demand destinations such as Reno-Lake Tahoe.

Werner Kunz-Cho, CEO of Fareportal, shares his thoughts, “Air service to smaller communities has reduced over the last decade, and yet consumer demand for regional travel options continues. Our company’s focus on innovative technology to enhance the travel experience led aha! to CheapOair and OneTravel. We are extremely pleased to partner with aha! to provide this needed service to the traveling public.”

Subodh Karnik, Chairman and CEO of ExpressJet states, “Fareportal is a travel technology innovator, and we appreciate CheapOair & OneTravel’s ability to provide travelers with easy-to-book, customized air travel solutions. We are pleased to partner with Fareportal to market aha!’s reasonably priced, nonstop flights between Reno-Tahoe and cities in the western United States.”

Domestic air travel in the United States has been strong in the last half of 2021, and experts expect US travel volume to continue to increase in 2022. To service this demand, aha! has an aggressive route expansion strategy planned for the year.

About aha!

aha! is a leisure brand of ExpressJet Airlines. aha! seeks to provide travelers in smaller communities, many who have seen air service reduced over the past decade through airline mergers, with convenient, short, nonstop flights to high-quality destinations like the Reno-Lake Tahoe region. In addition to offering value-priced, nonstop flights, aha! will soon partner with resorts, casinos, and attractions to “bundle” value-priced vacation packages.

Fareportal Continues Travel Innovation with Enhanced Chatbot Experience

The popularity of chat platforms has transformed the customer relationship management landscape. Chat platforms are now ubiquitous and have made their way into the fabric of everyday life. The demand for chat-based communications tools to support customers has grown, and that trend skyrocketed exponentially during the pandemic – a time when travel companies struggled to address the sharp rise in customer support requests.

In response, Fareportal, the travel tech company powering online travel agencies CheapOair and One Travel, went to work to enhance its existing chatbot service. The chatbot uses natural language understanding to mimic human conversation and is available 24/7. Customers can engage with the chatbot to search for flights, request help with their existing booking, and make changes to – or even cancel – their existing bookings quickly and easily. The chatbot can resolve most inquiries and when needed, complex cases that require human intervention are routed to the company’s live agents.

Werner Kunz-Cho, CEO of Fareportal, comments, “The number of travelers needing our assistance keeps growing, so we’ve fast-tracked many innovations for CheapOair and OneTravel.  Our commitment to customer service is unwavering, and we are very pleased to offer our customers an easy-to-use and efficient chatbot solution.”

Due to the success of the chatbot’s end-to-end solution that helps customers through the lifespan of their travel plans, the tool handles 7,000 chats daily, a 12-fold increase from January 2021, with a 55% containment rate for chats resolved by the bot and a 95% success rate in customers’ intent identification. Further enhancements will be rolled out in the future as the demand for chatbot-based service grows and customer needs evolve.

CISO to Mentor Cybersecurity Startups in Support of India’s Manufacturing and Economic Growth Initiatives

It’s no secret that for a travel technology company to innovate, it must keep a keen pulse on tomorrow’s talent, tools, and trends. After all, the future is a lot closer than it appears. It’s unfolding right here, right now.

Fareportal takes pride in having some of the brightest and most innovative minds in the Travel & Tourism industry among its ranks who are dedicated to leading the way as we continue to define the future of travel. One of these shining lights is Ankur Ahuja, CISO and Vice President of Information Security.

Ankur has been working hand-in-hand with the Data Security Council of India (DSCI) for more than eight years. Long recognized as an information security subject matter expert, he is among 27 professionals recently selected by the DSCI to be a startup mentor for the National Centre of Excellence (N-CoE) for Cybersecurity Technology Development, a joint initiative formed by the DSCI and India’s Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY). In this advisory role, Ankur will support the growth of approximately 30 early-stage cybersecurity startups of national interest by providing guidance and feedback on the companies’ programs. His efforts will support India’s “Make in India” and “Digital India” initiatives that aim to secure manufacturing investment, bolster economic growth, and improve online infrastructure in the second-most populous country in the world.

Ankur’s mentorship selection gives him the opportunity to reap the rewards that only a select group of individuals can access. He will be able to keep that ever-important pulse on the latest happenings in India’s cybersecurity industry, and he will work directly with startups that address new problems that surface in the rapidly evolving cybersecurity landscape, keeping him at the cutting edge of the industry.

Like Ankur, Fareportal will benefit too. Our cybersecurity team partners with many startup agencies to keep our data safe, and it’s likely that Ankur will mentor startups that will be able to solve Fareportal’s security challenges of the future.

Are Flights Cheaper on Cyber Monday? CheapOair Shares Encouraging Data!

American consumers have come to expect savings on their purchases made during what is increasingly known as the Cyber 5, the period from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday.  There are deals to be had across the period, but research shows that Cyber Monday remains the biggest draw.  In 2020, Cyber Monday delivered $10.8 billion in sales, while Black Friday reached $9 billion.

Air travel is not excluded from Cyber Monday savings opportunities.  This year’s e-commerce buying spree is yet to come, but the Data Science team at CheapOair looked at trends from 2019 and 2020 and report Cyber Monday flight savings were a reality for both domestic and international air travel, as compared to 3rd quarter of the same year.

In 2019, Cyber Monday discounts for domestic air travel improved by 16% as compared to the previous three months.  International air travel for the same period realized an average improvement of 15%.  2020 was a very different year for flight purchases, but the trends continued with domestic equaling 15%, and international hitting 10%, despite the scarcity caused by various travel restrictions in place at the time.

Werner Kunz-Cho, CEO of Fareportal, the travel technology company behind online travel agencies CheapOair and OneTravel, comments, “There is a lot of discussion around Cyber Monday, and travel is very much part of that conversation.  Travelers are seeking Cyber Monday flight deals.  We encourage our customers to take advantage of the many great air travel options to be found on our sites every day of the year, especially on Cyber Monday.”

As in past years, CheapOair will highlight partner deals and airfares across their sites, and their 10-day “Countdown to Cyber Monday” via Social Media channels beginning mid-November.
