CheapOair celebrates the trailblazing African American women of aviation

In a month-long series, CheapOair will be honoring Black History Month through the lens of great movements and innovators within the travel industry and beyond. This week, the OTA shines a spotlight on some of the great female aviators who paved the way for African American women in aviation by refusing to wait in the wings.

Bessie Coleman
Eight years before the all-female aviation organization the Ninety-Nines and six months before Amelia Earhart became a licensed pilot, twenty-four-year-old Bessie Coleman broke barriers when she received her pilot’s license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale – making her the first African American to achieve this feat.

Willa Brown
Following in the footsteps of Bessie Coleman, Willa Brown was the first African American woman to earn a U.S. pilot’s license in the U.S. After completing an M.B.A. from Northwestern University, Brown became a teacher and eventually a social worker. Frustrated with the boundaries and limitations of the time, Brown looked to the skies. Her and her husband, Cornelius Coffey, went on to open the first African American flight school in the United States.

Janet Bragg
For Janet Bragg, what began as a hobby soon evolved into the great passion of her life. Bragg, who started her career as a Registered Nurse, moved to Chicago to seek more opportunity with less bias-based restrictions. She was the first African American woman to enroll in the Curtis Wright School of Aeronautics, where she was also the sole female cadet. After initially being denied her pilot’s license, she finally received a commercial license a decade later in 1943. She went on to train female pilots in World War II. While many of the women she trained would eventually be selected as Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), she was turned down for being African American. She would later write about her perseverance in the face of adversity in her autobiography Soaring Above Setbacks.

Fly Comfortably! CheapOair Spills the Beans on What Foods to Avoid When Traveling

CheapOair, the travel experience experts, wants consumers to fly without worry and that includes worries of a gastrointestinal nature. To ensure a journey free of bloating and discomfort, the CheapOair team has advice for any traveler looking to snack without regret while in-flight.

Skip the Fast Food
The two culprits here are the high trans-fat and oil. Additionally, salty fast food could lead to swelling in the hands and feet which is exacerbated by the high altitude.

“This one’s tricky since any airport is packed to the brim with appetizing fast food options. Try to avoid anything fried or broiled. Grilled chicken and white rice are always good options to maintain gastric harmony during a trip,” said Tom Spagnola, Vice President of Supplier Relations at Fareportal.

Cruciferous Vegetables
Most travelers may think vegetables are a no-brainer when it comes to eating right before a flight but there are several usual suspects that will have anyone feeling a bit gassy before the plane leaves the tarmac.

“While extremely healthy, cruciferous vegetables like kale, cabbage, broccoli, and brussels sprouts are all foods known to increase the amount of gas produced in the body and should be avoided while sitting for hours in a low-air pressured cabin,” remarked Spagnola.

Be Wary of Certain Beverages
Sugar and fizz are not friends of anyone on a long flight. These two ingredients can expand the stomach and lead to extra bloat. It’s also wise to avoid alcohol or at least drink it in extreme moderation because the relatively low humidity on flights can cause faster dehydration. Water is always recommended as the number one way to stay hydrated on a flight.

He’s Coming to Town! CheapOair Gives Exclusive Insight into Santa’s Post Christmas Vacation

Christmas is hours away and CheapOair® knows that old St. Nick and his elves have a big evening ahead of them. After a night of spreading joy to boys and girls across the world, Santa Claus will deserve a little rest and relaxation. Luckily, CheapOair’s Holiday Cheer Team has great advice for the jolly Christmas icon.

“Santa has a heavy load of toys for the children, has to climb down millions of chimneys, and will probably be half-frozen flying over at such a high altitude. It only makes sense that he would seek out a little bit of tropical getaway for himself and Mrs. Claus,” remarked Tom Spagnola, Senior Vice President of Supplier Relations at Fareportal.

According to CheapOair’s data, while Santa doesn’t experience time the way most people do, he follows a loose path starting with the Pacific Ocean in the southern hemisphere and makes his way west toward North America. This would make several Caribbean islands such as Saint Martin, Grand Cayman, Turks & Caicos, and Antigua the perfect spots for Kris Kringle to soak in some post-sleigh sun.

“I would expect him to take off his Santa suit, throw on some candy cane boardshorts, and see him lying on the beach with sand between his toes and a summer drink in his hand,” added Spagnola.

CheapOair Predicts 6% Global Travel Increase In 2020

Leading Online Travel Agency Shares Predictions and Popular Destinations for the New Year

According to CheapOair, 2020 will be a very strong year for the airline industry. After analyzing year-over-year data, the flight-focused online travel agency has announced that they expect to see a global passenger increase of 4-6% while considering factors such as fuel cost, traveler demographics, and the economy.

“We’re looking forward to another booming year for the travel industry,” said Tom Spagnola, CheapOair’s Senior Vice President of Supplier Relations. “In 2019, we saw more and more airlines add ‘Basic Economy’ fares to their offerings. However, in the 2020 year ahead, airlines will focus on ‘Premium Economy’ seating that will increase revenue per ticket without sacrificing affordable airfare.”

Additionally, the budget fare boom has led to many travelers opting for more “off-the-grid” destinations for their extended trips and escapes in 2020. As a result of this increased consumer interest in under-the-radar retreats, and with it, fewer crowds, smaller cities are firmly putting themselves on the map.

“Smaller wine country spots in California are experiencing tremendous forward bookings in 2020. San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, and Mariposa are beautiful wineries with breathtaking views and much smaller crowds,” said Spagnola. “Upstate New York is also showing an increase in ticket sales as tourists are searching for quieter areas to enjoy their vacations with a quick and accessible route back to Manhattan.”

Internationally, destinations including Colombia, India, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe are home to many of these undiscovered cities. Each of these locations is within two hours from beach and city life, affording visitors both an immersive tropical sanctuary and bustling culture metropolis, all at a highly affordable price point.

CheapOair’s mission is to educate and aid consumers and travel professionals in both planning their travel accommodations and staying current on the most popular destinations. Thanks to its unique and comprehensive travel trend monitoring, the online travel agency does just that.

It’s Vacation Time! Mexico Tops Holiday Season’s International Getaway List

While there’s no place like home for the holidays, there’s also nothing quite like an incredible winter getaway. CheapOair®, the budget-friendly online travel agency, has named its top ten international destinations to take the perfect holiday vacation.

For a second consecutive year, Mexico topped the list with a 9% increase in travelers from 2018 to 2019. Additionally, India and the Philippines rounded out the top three spots with a steady increase in passenger volume over the last few years.

“This year we saw a spike in travelers taking advantage of visiting exotic destinations around the world to see and experience various cultures. If you’re not visiting friends or family this December, the lower airfare is very enticing to consumers who are looking to get a last-minute trip in before the New Year begins,”  said Tom Spagnola, CheapOair’s Senior Vice President of Supplier Relations.

Jamaica, which is known for its rich culture, saw a 77% increase in bookings year-over-year as more tourists are flocking to take part in the numerous festivities that begin in December and run through New Year’s Day.

CheapOair’s findings also found that although many customers were heading for warmer weather, some savvy snowbirds sought out cold-weather destinations as their preferred holiday vacation.

“Warm weather travel is always at its peak during the holiday season, however many travelers are still making plans to visit the cooler regions like England and Toronto. If you’re looking to celebrate the holidays around the world, international travel to Asia or Europe has extremely attractive costs right now as they’re considered to be in their low season,” added Spagnola.

As Sabre’s launch partner, Fareportal is embracing its technology-first approach to enhance the shopping experience and overall travel experience for its customers.

Sabre’s recently-released car shopping API is designed to help travelers find the best car rental option through enhanced search capabilities including vehicle images, logos, hours of operation, latitude and longitude. The new car shopping API is the latest collaboration between Sabre and Fareportal. Recently, Fareportal became the first OTA to adopt Sabre’s Agency Managed Commission, a solution that helps agencies increase revenue by automatically capturing commissions for every itinerary in real-time. As Sabre launches additional API offerings, Fareportal will continue to participate in the testing process as part of its strategic focus to utilize technology and bring consumers new shopping capabilities that will enhance the end-to-end traveler experience.

“At Fareportal, part of our strategy to create a competitive edge is to leverage new and existing technologies to give travelers a better experience when shopping our brands,” said Sam S. Jain, founder and CEO of Fareportal. “This is why our partnership with Sabre has been so valuable and successful. Sabre keeps us at the forefront so we can deliver a stand-out experience to travelers, which in turn creates loyalty and preference for our brands.”

Since inception, Fareportal has placed the highest value on technological innovation, and this approach continues to benefit the company’s customers and airline partners. Jain was one of the first to foresee airfare unbundling and as a result, CheapOair was the first OTA to integrate the ability to purchase seats, bags, and other ancillaries.

“Sabre is committed to providing our OTA customers with the differentiated products they need to exceed their customers’ expectations, and this begins with our APIs,” said Roshan Mendis, chief commercial officer of Sabre Travel Network. “Fareportal is a great partner with a shared focus on delivering a next-generation travel shopping experience. As we work to develop new capabilities, their partnership and feedback help us take our solutions to the next level.”

One of the world’s leading online travel agencies (OTA) with multiple consumer brands, Fareportal is a long-time Sabre customer and among other solutions relies on Sabre’s low-fare shopping solutions including Bargain Finder Max across its brands to meet the changing expectations of travelers.

Don’t be Scared! CheapOair Has Tips to Avoid Travel Nightmares

Halloween might be a spooky good time, but most travelers would rather see a ghost than have a bad experience at the airport. CheapOair®, the leading provider of affordable flights, wants to help consumers avoid common pain points with some tricks that will make travel a treat.

Missing Luggage
Check in as early as possible. Most travel nightmares begin with a rush to the airport and lost luggage is one of the most common and the most tedious travel setback.

“Checking in at the last minute may cause the airline baggage handlers to miss getting your luggage to your destination. Make sure you get the bar code for the luggage tag that goes on your bag. This is how the airlines can track your bag should they not be able to find the luggage. The bar code will save you a lot of time and frustration trying to find your luggage,” said Tom Spagnola, Senior Vice President of Supplier Relations at Fareportal.

It is also recommended that travelers place an itinerary inside their luggage in case the tag gets ripped off in transit. This will allow the airline to reunite consumers with their lost items a lot faster.

Missed Connections
There’s nothing that gets the heart pumping faster than an airport-length sprint to another terminal. A missed connection could derail an entire vacation.

“Should you be taking a connecting flight, try to avoid one that is less than one hour. The more room for error, the less likely you are to find yourself stranded and losing valuable time. With an abundance of restaurants, shops, and lounges now available at most major airports, a longer layover isn’t as tiresome as it used to be,” advised Spagnola.

Preparation is key. Travelers should plan the best they can by downloading an app (CheapOair offers one) that can keep them updated on flight times, delays, and gate changes. This will help circumvent any last-minute surprises that may lead to a missed flight.

For consumers that do miss their connections, see a gate agent immediately to confirm when then next flight will be available. As frustrating as it may feel, a cool head and a calm demeanor can work wonders when trying to get on another flight.

Passport Problems
A lost passport is everyone’s worst fear but there are several other passport snafus that can end a trip before it even begins.

As a rule of thumb, a passport should be valid up to 6-months AFTER the return date of your trip. It is also important that the document is not damaged in any way. A mangled passport can and will be denied by a TSA agent.

“Most people forget how easily a damaged passport could stop someone from getting on a flight. If there is damage beyond the usual “wear and tear” such as discoloration, ripped pages, or indecipherable details, that document is not fit for air travel. If you’re unsure, it’s always safest to get a new passport at least one month before you’re set to fly,” remarked Ruben Bello, Vice President of International Operations at Fareportal.

CheapOair’s mission is to educate and aid consumers and travel professionals in both planning their travel accommodations and staying current on the most popular destinations. Thanks to its unique comprehensive travel trend monitoring, the online travel agency does just that.
