COVID-19 is Changing Travel and CheapOair Has Insight on What to Expect in the Future

As the world of travel is heavily affected by COVID-19, CheapOair, the flight focused online travel agency, has identified several trends in changing consumer behavior.

“There is no question that the travel industry has had to realign itself at lightning speed these past few months. We are seeing new patterns in customer habits that are reflective of how society has been changed by COVID-19,” remarked Sam S. Jain, Founder and CEO of Fareportal.

One of the clearest illustrations of COVID-19’s effect on consumer travel is the age of those choosing to take flight during a pandemic. According to CheapOair’s data, bookings for individuals 18-24 years old have risen 29% since March, while there has been a 27% decrease in the number of people over the age of 65 planning air travel.

Interestingly, there has also been an uptick in solo travelers, with an 8% increase of people opting to fly alone as compared to the totals of pre-COVID-19 travel data.

“It’s clear that anyone who is perceived to be more ‘at risk’ is erring on the side of caution. We want to see the travel industry invigorated but what’s most important is that we all take strides to ensure that passenger health and safety is the number one priority,” continued Jain.

With the cost of a domestic airline ticket down an average of $66, more people may be tempted to travel as they adjust to the world amid a pandemic, and airlines are making many adjustments to maximize passenger safety.

“Most airlines have implemented precautionary measures which will increase consumer confidence.  We observe airlines are increasing capacity, which is a signal of growing consumer demand.  We believe leisure travel will rebound more quickly than business, as customers take advantage of lower prices and better deals for travel, and we are anticipating an ongoing increase in the number of people traveling in 2021,” said Jain.

CheapOair Offers Insight on How to Take a Fun and Safe Family Summer Vacation

CheapOair, the travel experience experts, know that more than ever, safety is paramount as the world begins to slowly open to travelers. With summer fast approaching, many families are wondering if their usual summer vacations will have to wait. The good news is that people who have been isolating with their family should be safe traveling with them.

“Most Americans have been quarantined with immediate family, so there’s not that much of a difference traveling with the immediate family who you have been quarantined with,” said Dr. Davidson Hamer, Professor of Global Health and Medicine at the Boston University School of Public Health and School of Medicine.

How families travel will look very different though and CheapOair has tips and tricks that will help folks have a memorable and, above all, safe summer vacation experience.

Visit National Parks
The United States boasts 58 national parks that cover over 84 million acres of land, leaving plenty of room for social distancing.

“Being outside or in a well-ventilated area is ideal for helping to control the spread of the virus. Visiting national parks and exploring hiking trails is a great way to vacation,” remarked Dr. Hamer.

Although, before hitting the road it’s essential to thoroughly research because several parks are only partially opened and have increased safety guidelines. The National Park Service Public Health page is a good starting point.

Visitors should also expect less resources to be available to them at the park sites, so it’s best to come fully prepared with first-aid, food, and any other supplies you may need.

The Closer, the Better
You don’t have to go too far to get away. In fact, staying local might be the best bet for most families. Luckily, there are thousands of beaches, hiking trails, lakes, and parks within a couple of hours from home for most Americans. It may even be plausible to use vacation home rentals in nearby towns for a change of scenery if the host has properly adhered to hygiene guidelines. When looking for a local vacation spot, it’s best to pick somewhere that has very few shared facilities. The more space and privacy a family has minimizes the risk of getting sick.

Stay Informed
It’s very important to research the intended destination before departing as different states and territories may have varying rules and restrictions. The CDC recommends checking with state and local health departments for making any traveling decisions.

No matter where your summer vacation destination ends up being, check CDC guidelines, and state and local policies.

“Different areas of the country saw COVID-19 peak at different times with different intensities. “While we may see the transmission of the virus substantially decrease during the summer, we’re expecting a resurgence in the fall so it’s important to remain diligent in hygiene practices and social distancing,” said Dr. Hamer.

CheapOair.com Reveals 2020’s Popular Domestic Spring Break Destinations and Money-Saving Tips for Booking Flights

It may be winter, but college students everywhere are weeks away from Spring Break.  CheapOair®, the leading provider of affordable airfare, compared data and analyzed trends to identify the U.S destinations 18-24-year-olds are headed to this year.

Unsurprisingly, the sunny state of Florida continued to be one of the most booked Spring Break getaways with Orlando topping the 2020 bookings and Ft. Lauderdale coming in as a close second. Interestingly, many college-aged vacationers chose to forego the beach in favor of a city getaway with Los Angeles and New York ranking fifth and sixth, respectively.

“While we’re seeing the usual suspects in our Spring Break findings, it’s worth noting that up-and-coming cities such as Phoenix, Arizona are seeing an influx of spring breakers. Phoenix is filled to the brim with great nightlife, cultural sites, and food – all for an affordable price,” remarked Tom Spagnola, Senior Vice President of Supplier Relations.

The OTA also noted that many travelers picked their Spring Break destinations based on affordability over luxury.

“It’s no secret that Spring Break could be an expensive time to travel but there are a few things you travelers can do to save money and still have a great time. First and foremost, I’d recommend packing lightly and if you can avoid checking a bag – definitely do so,” added Spagnola.

CheapOair also suggests traveling on off-peak days such as Tuesday and Thursday, explore flying into neighboring airports with lower average airfare, and taking advantage of the numerous free events most cities have to offer to tourists.

CheapOair’s mission is to educate and aid consumers and travel professionals in both planning their travel accommodations and staying current on the most popular destinations. Thanks to its unique and comprehensive travel trend monitoring, the online travel agency does just that.

CheapOair celebrates the trailblazing African American women of aviation

In a month-long series, CheapOair will be honoring Black History Month through the lens of great movements and innovators within the travel industry and beyond. This week, the OTA shines a spotlight on some of the great female aviators who paved the way for African American women in aviation by refusing to wait in the wings.

Bessie Coleman
Eight years before the all-female aviation organization the Ninety-Nines and six months before Amelia Earhart became a licensed pilot, twenty-four-year-old Bessie Coleman broke barriers when she received her pilot’s license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale – making her the first African American to achieve this feat.

Willa Brown
Following in the footsteps of Bessie Coleman, Willa Brown was the first African American woman to earn a U.S. pilot’s license in the U.S. After completing an M.B.A. from Northwestern University, Brown became a teacher and eventually a social worker. Frustrated with the boundaries and limitations of the time, Brown looked to the skies. Her and her husband, Cornelius Coffey, went on to open the first African American flight school in the United States.

Janet Bragg
For Janet Bragg, what began as a hobby soon evolved into the great passion of her life. Bragg, who started her career as a Registered Nurse, moved to Chicago to seek more opportunity with less bias-based restrictions. She was the first African American woman to enroll in the Curtis Wright School of Aeronautics, where she was also the sole female cadet. After initially being denied her pilot’s license, she finally received a commercial license a decade later in 1943. She went on to train female pilots in World War II. While many of the women she trained would eventually be selected as Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), she was turned down for being African American. She would later write about her perseverance in the face of adversity in her autobiography Soaring Above Setbacks.

Fly Comfortably! CheapOair Spills the Beans on What Foods to Avoid When Traveling

CheapOair, the travel experience experts, wants consumers to fly without worry and that includes worries of a gastrointestinal nature. To ensure a journey free of bloating and discomfort, the CheapOair team has advice for any traveler looking to snack without regret while in-flight.

Skip the Fast Food
The two culprits here are the high trans-fat and oil. Additionally, salty fast food could lead to swelling in the hands and feet which is exacerbated by the high altitude.

“This one’s tricky since any airport is packed to the brim with appetizing fast food options. Try to avoid anything fried or broiled. Grilled chicken and white rice are always good options to maintain gastric harmony during a trip,” said Tom Spagnola, Vice President of Supplier Relations at Fareportal.

Cruciferous Vegetables
Most travelers may think vegetables are a no-brainer when it comes to eating right before a flight but there are several usual suspects that will have anyone feeling a bit gassy before the plane leaves the tarmac.

“While extremely healthy, cruciferous vegetables like kale, cabbage, broccoli, and brussels sprouts are all foods known to increase the amount of gas produced in the body and should be avoided while sitting for hours in a low-air pressured cabin,” remarked Spagnola.

Be Wary of Certain Beverages
Sugar and fizz are not friends of anyone on a long flight. These two ingredients can expand the stomach and lead to extra bloat. It’s also wise to avoid alcohol or at least drink it in extreme moderation because the relatively low humidity on flights can cause faster dehydration. Water is always recommended as the number one way to stay hydrated on a flight.

CheapOair’s mission is to educate and aid consumers and travel professionals in both planning their travel accommodations and staying current on the most popular destinations. Thanks to its unique comprehensive travel trend monitoring, the online travel agency does just that.

He’s Coming to Town! CheapOair Gives Exclusive Insight into Santa’s Post Christmas Vacation

Christmas is hours away and CheapOair® knows that old St. Nick and his elves have a big evening ahead of them. After a night of spreading joy to boys and girls across the world, Santa Claus will deserve a little rest and relaxation. Luckily, CheapOair’s Holiday Cheer Team has great advice for the jolly Christmas icon.

“Santa has a heavy load of toys for the children, has to climb down millions of chimneys, and will probably be half-frozen flying over at such a high altitude. It only makes sense that he would seek out a little bit of tropical getaway for himself and Mrs. Claus,” remarked Tom Spagnola, Senior Vice President of Supplier Relations at Fareportal.

According to CheapOair’s data, while Santa doesn’t experience time the way most people do, he follows a loose path starting with the Pacific Ocean in the southern hemisphere and makes his way west toward North America. This would make several Caribbean islands such as Saint Martin, Grand Cayman, Turks & Caicos, and Antigua the perfect spots for Kris Kringle to soak in some post-sleigh sun.

“I would expect him to take off his Santa suit, throw on some candy cane boardshorts, and see him lying on the beach with sand between his toes and a summer drink in his hand,” added Spagnola.

CheapOair, the user savvy online travel agency, has teamed up with Venmo to facilitate an even easier travel booking experience for customers. CheapOair Predicts 6% Global Travel Increase In 2020

Leading Online Travel Agency Shares Predictions and Popular Destinations for the New Year

According to CheapOair, 2020 will be a very strong year for the airline industry. After analyzing year-over-year data, the flight-focused online travel agency has announced that they expect to see a global passenger increase of 4-6% while considering factors such as fuel cost, traveler demographics, and the economy.

“We’re looking forward to another booming year for the travel industry,” said Tom Spagnola, CheapOair’s Senior Vice President of Supplier Relations. “In 2019, we saw more and more airlines add ‘Basic Economy’ fares to their offerings. However, in the 2020 year ahead, airlines will focus on ‘Premium Economy’ seating that will increase revenue per ticket without sacrificing affordable airfare.”

Additionally, the budget fare boom has led to many travelers opting for more “off-the-grid” destinations for their extended trips and escapes in 2020. As a result of this increased consumer interest in under-the-radar retreats, and with it, fewer crowds, smaller cities are firmly putting themselves on the map.

“Smaller wine country spots in California are experiencing tremendous forward bookings in 2020. San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, and Mariposa are beautiful wineries with breathtaking views and much smaller crowds,” said Spagnola. “Upstate New York is also showing an increase in ticket sales as tourists are searching for quieter areas to enjoy their vacations with a quick and accessible route back to Manhattan.”

Internationally, destinations including Colombia, India, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe are home to many of these undiscovered cities. Each of these locations is within two hours from beach and city life, affording visitors both an immersive tropical sanctuary and bustling culture metropolis, all at a highly affordable price point.

CheapOair’s mission is to educate and aid consumers and travel professionals in both planning their travel accommodations and staying current on the most popular destinations. Thanks to its unique and comprehensive travel trend monitoring, the online travel agency does just that.
