New year-over-year data reveals travelers are searching more, booking later, and becoming increasingly price-conscious amid rising airfare costs
NEW YORK CITY (May 12, 2026) – Even as travel demand remains strong in 2026, rising airfare costs are making travelers more cautious about when they book their trips, according to new year-over-year data from leading online travel agency, CheapOair. While demand across weekend, family, and group travel remains strong, travelers are increasingly delaying purchases, searching more frequently, and waiting for better pricing before locking in plans.
“Travel demand continues to remain strong, but consumers are approaching bookings much more intentionally than we’ve seen in previous years,” said Yuvraj Datta, Chief Supply and Revenue Officer at CheapOair. “While more travelers are continuing to prioritize booking trips, they are also more aware than ever before of what they’re spending, which is shifting when and how they book.”
The report analyzes year-over-year booking and search behavior across weekend, family, and group travel segments from 2025 compared to 2026, across the top domestic and international destinations booked through CheapOair.com.
Key Findings from the Report:
Domestic Airfare Continues to Rise
Comparing the top 10 domestic destinations year-over-year:
- Weekend travel fares increased +14.3%
- Family travel fares increased +15.7%
As travelers continue balancing strong demand with rising costs, the data points to a growing shift toward flexible planning, shorter booking windows, and more value-driven decision-making heading into the remainder of 2026.
Last Minute Booking Increases
Short booking behavior is increasingly dominating, with 62% of travelers booking trips within 0–30 days of departure. Longer-term planning continues to decline as travelers prioritize flexibility and wait for better pricing opportunities.
Travelers Are Searching More, But Booking More Selectively
Search activity increased across all travel segments year-over-year, signaling continued demand despite economic pressures.
- Domestic weekend travel searches increased +16.2%
- International family travel searches increased +16.3%
- International group travel searches increased +11.5%
However, bookings have not kept pace with search growth, suggesting travelers are delaying purchase decisions amid fluctuating airfare costs.
Group Travel Sees Biggest Impact from Rising Costs
Group travel (5 or more passengers) has become the most impacted segment, with rising airfare costs influencing both domestic and international bookings.
- Domestic group travel bookings declined -2.9%
- International group travel bookings declined -2.4%
- Average domestic group airfare rose +27.3% year-over-year
Families Aren’t Letting Rising Costs Stop Their Vacation Plans
Families are continuing to plan trips despite ongoing airfare increases, particularly across domestic leisure and international VFR (visiting friends and relatives) travel.
Orlando Continues to Lead U.S. Travel Demand
Orlando ranked as the #1 booked destination across weekend, family, and group travel segments, with bookings increasing +5% year-over-year.
Other top destinations included:
